In the Dauwendaele district in the Municipality of Middelburg, SuDS was implemented next to a shopping center. To maximise visibility of the investment and public awareness of climate resilience, citizens were be involved in the whole process.
This pilot investment explores solutions for retrofitting of SUDS in two different types of urban public space: green and paved surface.
A stakeholders group, called De Overloper, consisted of members of the neighbourhood team, residents, the Waterboard, Scholl, Housing Corporation and the municipality.
During three meetings the team worked together with a SUDS architect Robert Bray Associates to work out a number of designs. All wishes were listed in a first meeting. The landscape architect presented two sketch designs to the group and a final design was chosen.

The redesign of De Overloper started end of 2019. Water drainage and infiltration systems were installed. A pond and hills are being dug in the Overloper. New plants will be planted at the beginning of 2020.
